My friends in college expected me to talk in a Nothern slang like the language used by Anak Mami in Penang when I introduced myself as a Kedahan during the orientation week in 2009. Although I was born in Baling, I pick up a little dialect from the Northerners as I speak in a normal Malay language with my family most of the time. I only speak like the Kedahans with my friends at school, and my mother is a Kelantanese and she rarely speaks in a Northern dialect; that influences me a lot.
In fact, the language used in Baling has a bit of influence by the Siamese language and Kelantanese dialect. I used to be misinterpreted as a Kelantanese when I speak and I cannot blame them at all because the language is quite the same. Some of the words used by the Balingites are not the same like the people from the other Northern states. I am sure that the Kelantanese and Balingites are familiar with words like "kelik" for "balik", and "demo" for "mereka". Please refer to the image below for more information.
Now tell me that it is hard to digest right? I even told all of the things being mentioned in the paragraphs above and some of my friends gave an awkward reaction. I know deep inside they thought that I have forgotten my roots and language, and tried to speak like those KLites. Sometimes I spoke in a Kedahan accent but they made fun of it and I hate it. They judged me for not talking like the other Northerners and when I did, they laughed! That is so rude you know; all of us come from different states in Malaysia and please respect that.
Okay, no heart feelings yea? I just want to clarify some things that I have kept inside my heart for too long. I will update on something called #CakapKL tomorrow, wait for it yea? By the way, I am not mad at anyone and please do the same to me. Well, I think that is all for tonight, take care and God bless you my beautiful and handsome people.
P/S: I am proud to be born in Baling Kedah and I love my Northern slang ;)
